Details

Puyau Homestay lies on a riverbank in a family sago grove, deep in the remote northern Waigeo forest. (See the map below.)

In the local language, “pu” means “paddle” and “yau” means “to pound sago”. You’ll travel upriver, deep into the forest to the family sago grove, where, if you want to, you can participate in sago harvesting and preparation.

Puyau Homestay is surrounded by tropical forest, which is alive with hundreds of species of plants, birds, and other wildlife. It’s the ultimate naturalist’s hideaway.

Puyau Homestay’s single 2-room bungalow can sleep up to four guests at a time. (The rooms can be booked separately, so if you want to book for 4, then request “2 x Room in a bungalow” on the booking form above.)

Bedding is inner spring mattresses on the floor. Bed covers, bolsters, pillows and mosquito nets are provided. Power outlets are provided.

Each room has a verandah equipped with chairs and a small table.

Meals are served in Puyau Homestay’s dining room. Free drinking water and tea and coffee making supplies are always available there.

Guests share a two-room bathroom building. One room contains dip mandi (bucket and ladle) bathing. The other houses a squat toilet.

Electricity for lighting and charging devices is provided by generator. The generator operates from sunset to around midnight.

There is no mobile phone reception at Puyau Homestay. Unless you have a satellite phone, you’ll be completely offline while at the homestay.

The village of Kabare is about 15 minutes away by boat. Basic supplies and a Telkomsel signal are available there.

Please do take all your inorganic rubbish away with you when leaving Puyau Homestay. Like everywhere in Raja Ampat, there is no safe waste disposal or recycling available at Kri. Inorganic waste like plastic and batteries that you leave behind will only contribute to the trashing of paradise.

Only a little English is spoken at Puyau Homestay: if you have no Bahasa Indonesia, then bringing an offline translation app or phrasebook is strongly recommended.

Transport / Getting there

Puyau Homestay guests need to fly from Sorong (or Waisai) to Kabare. (opens in a new window) (Note that Susi Air flights to Waisai/Kabare have a maximum of 15kg baggage allowance!)

Puyau Homestay does not offer Waisai pickups. Please don't select the Waisai pickup checkbox. Instead, contact Puyau after booking to arrange your Kabare pickup. (Contact details will be provided in your booking confirmation email.)

Pickups from Kabare airport are by car and boat, and cost IDR 600,000. The cost is shared by up to 4 passengers.

Longboat pickups from Kabare harbour cost IDR 500,000. (Max 4, cost shared by passengers.)

Activities

Forest flora and fauna, and the remote Waigeo north coast island villages are the major attractions at Puyau Homestay.

The forests that surround Puyau Homestay are every bit as biodiverse as Raja Ampat's oceans. Your hosts know the forest intimately, and will know exactly where to look for any species you might like to see.

Again, if you can't speak Indonesian, then having some photos of the species you are interested in would be best.
